Methods Courses
As a teacher educator, I have experience with professional development and coaching, as well as serving as the instructor of university ELA methods courses.
Writing Instruction
I have expertise in writing pedagogy and was a teacher consultant for the Heart of Texas Writing Project, incorporating research about writing pedagogy into my own composition instruction as well as collaborative work with teachers.
Rhetoric Courses
As an instructor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, I taught introductory college writing and designed an original course, "The Rhetoric of Food." Find out more about the Rhetoric of Food on our course website, where you can read original food writing from former students.
K-12 Experiences
I've worked as a high school English teacher, after-school program curriculum designer, and youth online discussion facilitator, all in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts.
Literacy Methods
I have taught courses within the UTeach Urban Teachers certification program as well as general courses for secondary certification. To see some of our students' thinking and learning about adolescent literacy, visit the course blog from Fall 2017.
Important aspects of all of these courses are preservice teachers' inquiry into their own literate lives through reading and writing workshop and a focus on understanding how power and privilege are embedded in literacy, particularly in school.
